Parental burnout is everywhere right now. That place where you’re touched out, overstimulated, and utterly exhausted. Too overwhelmed to even start the endless to-do list.
With Christmas holidays in full swing, I hear it all the time from overwhelmed parents:
The noise never stops
Decisions pile up: what to do, where to go
Sibling fights, whining, big emotions everywhere
That nagging feeling that you’re “getting it wrong” even when it’s not all bad
Sound familiar?
One of my favourite ways to clear this chaos is journaling. But not just any journaling.
Journaling That Actually Helps Burned-Out Parents
I was chatting with my amazing client, Sal, this week. When I asked if journaling was new to her, she said:
“YOUR way of journaling is new to me! But I’ve been journaling for years.”
That hit me. We all think everyone journals the same way, but there are so many approaches.
Sal had been using journaling to brain dump all her swirling thoughts and feelings, which is great for reducing parental overwhelm. But the next step, using journaling to empower action, find clarity, and see beyond the noise, was missing.
This is a big part of reparenting yourself as a parent:
Accept your feelings without drowning in them
Sit with your emotions, understand them
Choose your next step from a place of calm and control
A Simple Reset for Parents Feeling Overwhelmed
If your life is feeling like too much, try this:
Light a candle
Put on your comfies
Grab your journal
Then ask yourself:
Where can I see joy today?
Where am I getting in my own way?
What would I like to create more of, and what is one small step I can take toward that?
These parenting journal prompts help you reset, even when the day feels chaotic.
💡 Bonus: I shared a full set of powerful journal prompts on Instagram that help tackle anxiety and fear. They are the same exercises I use with clients to shake off a shaky start to the day.
Why Journaling Works for Overwhelmed Parents
This is not about magic. It is about building small habits that ground you. These are the same tools I guide clients through when we work together, helping them feel seen, steady, and strong no matter what their day brings.
